Krabman interviews…. Episode 30

Hi again! Another player up for some Q&A is Star (=★=) from Discord channel!

1.  How did you start playing Riichi?
I started playing when I was in college (ages ago). At first I’ve played mostly with friends from school, then I graduated to “furii” mahjong (i.e., playing with strangers at mahjong parlors). I’ve become more and more serious about mahjong in the process, as you could lose a lot of money if you don’t play well at mahjong parlors. However, it was not until I started playing on Tenhou in 2015 that I began taking mahjong as seriously as I do now.

2. What do you like the most about it?
I like it that the game has both luck and skill components.

3. How often do you play?
I try not to play more than four games per day (I often fail).

4. Online or live Mahjong – which one do you prefer and why?
I think live Mahjong is more fun; I enjoy chatting with fellow players or spectators during or after a game. However, for the purpose of training, online Mahjong is much, much better than live. I take online Mahjong more seriously.

5. How do you practice/learn strategy & theory?
I read a lot and play a lot. I find it very useful to discuss strategies with other people.

6. Favorite Yakuman?
None.

7. Any tournament achievements?
I have participated in a dozen tournaments, but have never won.

8. Biggest Mahjong related dream?
I don’t have a dream. My short-term goal (within a month) is to get back to Houou Table, the highest Room on Tenhou. My mid-term goal (within a year) is to reach 8-dan in Houou. I’ll think about a long-term goal once I achieve my mid-term goal.

9. Quick tip for Mahjong beginners
Read http://riichi.dynaman.net/ and play a lot. Reading about strategies is one thing, but being able to implement the strategies you’ve learned is quite another. Therefore, when I read mahjong books I usually read them at least a few times.

Thanks for answering, Star!

May Yakuman be with you!
