My today’s guest is DdR_Dan, a self-taught upper Tokujou-almost lower Houou player!
1. How did you start playing Riichi?
I was interested because of Saki and Akagi, and my friends told me about the gamedesign mahjong site, then later I tried tenhou.
2. What do you like the most about it?
High pressure moments, where you can win or lose on a single draw or discard, and the excitement of winning a really big hand at a critical moment.
3. How often do you play?
About one tenhou hanchan a day. More or less depending on how into it I am at the moment.
4. Online or live Mahjong – which one do you prefer and why?
They’re pretty similar to me. Online is easier to play whenever you want. Live mahjong can be a cool opportunity to travel and meet people.
5. How do you practice/learn strategy & theory?
For the most part, I reasoned out my own theories by playing and thinking about the game.
6. Favorite Yakuman?
Rinshan kaihou suuankou.
7. Any tournament achievements?
Top in US IORMC qualifiers 2016, won 2 small casual Colorado tournaments.
8. Biggest Mahjong related dream?
天鳳位 on tenhou, or 10dan I guess…
9. Quick tip for Mahjong beginners?
Learn as much about tile efficiency as you can, then when you know which tiles aren’t that useful but are dangerous, discard them as soon as possible.
