Hello!
Long time no read! At last, I’m back with a new interview. My today’s guest is Benawii from the Competitive Riichi Hub on Discord!
1. How did you start playing Riichi?
I have always heard that Chinese people like to play Mahjong a lot, so one day I set out to learn how to play. I played a Chinese variant first then moved on to Riichi and have never looked back.
2. What do you like the most about it?
It’s a game where decisions are typically made using estimates rather than reading a large number of variations (as in chess for example).
3. How often do you play?
1-2 hanchan a day.
4. Online or live Mahjong – which one do you prefer and why?
I prefer playing online because it’s easier to find stronger players who play seriously and it’s easier to review games.
5. How do you practice/learn strategy & theory?
As a beginner I read strategy guides on sites like Osamuko. After that I review games by strong players, trying to reason out why their choices are better than my choices.
6. Favorite Yakuman?
Daichisei.
7. Any tournament achievements?
I don’t participate in tournaments much, because I don’t believe tournament results reflect the player’s skill level.
8. Biggest Mahjong related dream?
Making a Mahjong AI that’s stronger than the top human players.
9. Quick tip for Mahjong beginners?
Having the right attitude is the most important thing for improving in Mahjong. Always keep a lookout for mistakes and things you can improve, regardless of results.
Thank you, Benawii!
May Yakuman be with you!
